Art statement:
“As a former Christian Scientist, now atheist, this piece is about my transformation in physical appearance (the start of my gender transition journey), from a previously tightly gripped comprehension and therefore, expression, about what was “appropriate” for me to do to keep my status in society. Experiencing yearnings that society and my religion at the time said were destitute caused me inner self hatred so destructive that eventually I had to break free. I fell into the same traps of black and white thinking many times along the way.
This art is also about the broadening of horizons I experienced as I faced my fears and the expansion of compassion I felt the more I did so. This empathy was new to me as my life up until then was previously more uptight and judgmentally lived. But what I hadn’t known at the time is how alienated I was.
And it’s about the step into the unknown that is shedding binary limitations and instead choosing to embrace the diverse, short lived spectrum of life. And to me that’s part of how I practice my spirituality.”
